The Diary of a Young Girl-Anne Frank-Tuesday-May 18, 1943 (Page 105)-Onwards
Anne reports that four
crewmen of the Allies forces jumped out of a burning plane with the help of
parachutes. They were six in the plane and the pilot got burnt in the plane and
the sixth person was hiding somewhere. German security came up to pick them up.
The whole incident was reported by the milkman.
Anne says that they have
to burn vegetable peels and garbage because they cannot throw them outside as
they fear being noticed by the outsiders.
Then she writes that the
university students have to give their approval that they support and have
faith in the German Govt. and approve the new orders. They are being forced to
sign such type of statement.
There was severe penalty for not signing the statement. The students who refuse it, would be sent to a German Labour Camp.
At night Anne’s mother and
Mrs. Van Daan are very much scared when they hear a loud boom created by
firebombs. They all feel insecure and were afraid that any firebomb might fall
on the warehouse building. Anne imagines as if ‘a firebomb has fallen beside
her bed.
Sunday June 13, 1943
Anne’s father composed a
poem in German language for her birthday. Margot volunteered to translate into
Dutch. She also received several gifts including a big book on Greek and Roman
mythology and a lot of candy.

Anne feels very much sad when she comes to know that Mr. Voskuijl is suffering from cancer. Actually he was to be operated upon for ulcer. When his stomach was opened, the doctors found that he was suffering from cancer, so the operation was cancelled and his stomach was stitched up. He was kept there for three weeks and then sent to home.
Now he lives there surrounded by his wife and eight children thinking
about his approaching death. Anne feels sorry for him. All the inmates of the
Secret Annex are obliged to him for the service he has done to them. Anne
wishes if she could go to meet him at his home and talk to him to soothe his
disturbed mind.
Next, Anne talks about hundred per cent possibility of
handing the radio over to the authorities. But Mr. Kleiman is going to arrange
a small radio for them. In a way, radio is a great source of giving them news
about the outside world and it also cheers them up in their adverse time.
Chapter II (November 10,
1942 to June 15, 1943)
Chapter III:
Anne begins this diary
entry by saying that she has become a little bit hypocritical or one can say
that she has learnt how to handle the situation diplomatically. She has dropped
her previous method of saying exactly what she was thinking.
She has also dropped
practicing ‘short-hand’ for two reasons. The reason is to save time for other
subjects and the second one is to protect her eyesight which has become weak
and she need glasses for that.
Her eyesight was discussed
in the Annex and it was suggested that she should go out of the hiding place to
get her eyes checked.
Anne was petrified (extremely terrified) at the idea.
It was not a small thing
to go out of the Annex and walk down the street. So the suggestions need deep
consideration and all the risks and difficulties were to be taken into view.
Bep has given Margot and
Anne some office work to complete and they are doing it with remarkable
accuracy. Miep brings vegetables in large shopping bags on her bicycle after
purchasing them. She also brings the library books every Saturday for them.
They anxiously wait for Saturdays because their only diversion (break from the
dull routine) are reading, studying and listening to the radio.
