Summary of the Diary Entry (Wednesday, July 8, 1942)
In this diary entry, Anne Frank describes the dramatic events that forced her family to go into hiding. One Sunday afternoon, Anne learns that her father has supposedly received a call-up notice from the SS. The news terrifies her because she immediately imagines concentration camps and imprisonment. Later, however, she discovers that the notice was actually for her sixteen-year-old sister, Margot. This second shock makes Anne cry, but her mother assures her that Margot will not have to report because the family will go into hiding immediately.
As the family prepares for their secret departure, Anne is filled with questions about where they will hide and what their future will be like. She and Margot begin packing their most important belongings. Anne carefully places her diary, books, letters, and personal items into her schoolbag, believing that memories are more valuable than clothes.
That evening, trusted family friends and helpers, including Miep Gies and Jan Gies, assist in secretly moving clothing and other necessities to the hiding place. The atmosphere in the apartment is tense and strange, and nobody feels like eating. Anne realizes that it will be her last night in her own home.
The next morning, the Frank family leaves early. To avoid attracting attention, they wear several layers of clothing because Jews could not openly carry suitcases full of belongings. Anne feels uncomfortable and overheated but understands the need for caution. Margot leaves first on her bicycle with Miep, while Anne, her parents, and their bags follow later.
Before leaving, Anne says goodbye to her beloved cat, Moortje, who is to be cared for by neighbors. The family leaves their home looking as though they have departed suddenly. Their only concern is reaching their secret hiding place safely. Filled with fear, uncertainty, and sadness, Anne begins a new chapter of her life, unaware of what lies ahead.
