The Diary of a Young Girl-Anne Frank-Monday-March 27-1944-onwards
Although Anne dislikes
politics, yet she is going to devote some time writing about it. Politics was
the subject that is usually favoured by men for discussion, It was frequently
discussed in the Annex also. Anne also says that it is stupid to argue on politics
because it makes the things worse. Most of the news brought in the Annex are
false as they come from unauthorized sources.
Anne has discovered a
trick these days. She initiates some topic on politics by uttering just a
topic, a word or a question, the whole of the family gets busy discussing that
topic till late at night. They express their thoughts in different ways; some are
optimistic and some are pessimistic in their views. They are also crazy about
listening to the news broadcasts on radios. Anne wonders at the patience they
show in listening to the broadcast after every hour.

Anne writes that her
mother has forbidden her to go upstairs in Peter’s room. She tells Anne that
Mrs. van Daan is jealous of her, but Anne knows it very well that her mother
was jealous of her, not Mrs. van Daan.
Second, Peter has invited
Margot to join them upstairs. Anne does not know about Peter’s intention in
inviting her sister. Third, Anne has asked her father if they should care for
Mrs. van Daan’s jealousy and he replied that she should not.
Mother thinks that Peter
is in love with her because he keeps on looking at her every time.
Anne further writes that she is in difficult position now. Both Anne and her mother were against each other and her father silent about it. She cannot leave Peter for her mother’s sake. It is fortunate that she is able to hide her feelings and has also managed to hide as to how crazy she is about Peter. She considers Peter superior to herself in many ways.
He looks as innocent as a child when he lays
his head on his arms and closes eyes’ he is loving when he plays and talks with
the cat; he is strong when he carries heavy loads of potatoes and other things;
he is brave when he goes up to watch the gunfire or when he walks down to look
for the burglars and finally he is so endearing when he does anything so
awkward or clumsy.
Anne writes that her
father calls her conceited or vain about herself. But she believes that she is
pretty because lots of people call her so.
She also writes that Peter
admired her dimples the previous day.

Anne feels highly elated
to imagine that her diary is going to be published as a full-fledged novel
after the war. It has been announced by Mr. Bolestein, the Cabinet Minister, on
the Dutch broadcast from London. Anne has also thought about her Diary’s title
“Secret Annex” and it sounds like a detective story.
She also mentions about
350 British planes dropping 550 tons of bombs on Ijmuiden (/aamudin/) and how
the houses trembled like blades of grass in the wind and how the women were
frightened.
She writes that it is not easy for her to describe the woes of people during war-time. It would take a long time and no one can predict as to when it is going to end. People have to stand in long queues to buy vegetables and other goods; doctors are unable to visit their patients as their vehicles are stolen as soon as they turn their backs to them. Thefts and burglaries are rampant in the city.
Children of eight or eleven years smash
window-panes of the houses and steal whatever comes to their hands. Law and
order situation has been disturbed everywhere. Hunger is seen in people’s eyes.
A week’s ration for food does not last for more than two days. Men are being
shifted to Germany. Clothes have worn out and shoes have run down. There is
steep rise in the prices of goods due to black-marketing. (680)

Anne begins this diary
entry by writing something about war and Russia’s participation. She also
writes that German troops have annexed Hungary and about a million Jews living
there will be doomed now.
She also mentions about
Mr. van Daan’s birthday that was celebrated in simple way. She also talks about
Peter and also thanks God for His blessings.
