Q1. Maintaining a balance between
one’s fantasies and real world is the key to survival. Give your opinion on
Sophie’s character in the light of the statement. Justify with reference to
‘Going Places’.
Ans. We, all
human beings, are blessed by God with the faculty of imagination. We are able
to imagine anything beyond the limit of time and space. But we should be
reasonable while using this faculty of the mind. We cannot afford to live in
the world of imagination all the time without converting our dreams into
reality without efforts. It leads to frustration and disappointment as we find
in the case of Sophie in Going to Places. She neither makes a balance between
her dreams and reality, nor does she try to change her dreams into reality with
her efforts. This is the reason why she suffers disappointment and frustration
in the end of the story. She thinks that she has met Danny Casey and he has
promised to meet her again. Actually, she is so much obsessed with her
dream-world that she cannot differentiate when she is reality and when she is
her dreams.
“The
absence of a human population in Antarctica means that the region is relatively
pristine and has not been subject to the same levels of human impact as other
areas of the world.”
Simplified Meaning:
Antarctica
has no human population, so it's mostly untouched and hasn't experienced as
much human impact as other places.
Text:
“This
makes it an important reference point for understanding the effects of human
activities on the environment and the potential impacts of climate change. “
Simplified Meaning:
This
makes Antarctica a key place for studying how human activities affect the
environment and what climate change might do.
Text:
“Carbon
records allow us to study past climates by analysing the air bubbles trapped in
ice cores. They provide a glimpse into the Earth's atmospheric conditions at
the time the ice was formed and can help scientists understand how the climate
has changed over time.”
Simplified Meaning:
Carbon
records let us study past climates by analyzing air bubbles trapped in ice
cores. These bubbles show what the Earth's atmosphere was like when the ice
formed, helping scientists understand how the climate has changed over time.
Text
“….starting
with the importance of Antarctica as a relatively pristine location, and then
moving on to explain the significance of the ice cores and carbon records found
there.”
Simplified Meaning:
Antarctica
is important because it’s a relatively untouched region, providing a clear
reference point for studying environmental changes. The ice cores found there
are especially valuable, as they contain trapped air bubbles that serve as
carbon records. These records allow scientists to analyze past climates,
revealing what the Earth's atmosphere was like when the ice formed and helping
us understand how the climate has changed over time.
Text: The Tiger King
“The
use of this physical gesture indicates a sense of discomfort or unease, and
implies that the astrologers were reluctant to reveal the prophecy. Humiliation
or grief would be more strongly expressed
in the text if they were the emotions being conveyed. Disbelief is also not the
correct answer, as there is no indication that the astrologers doubted their
prediction.”
Simplified Meaning:
This
physical gesture suggests discomfort or unease, indicating that the astrologers
were hesitant to reveal the prophecy. If the emotions being conveyed were
humiliation or grief, the text would express them more clearly. Disbelief isn't
the right interpretation either, as there's no sign that the astrologers
doubted their prediction.
The Tiger King
“The
astrologers are predicting that the child born under this star will be a great
warrior and a champion, implying that the child will display exceptional
courage and bravery in battle or in other challenges. This also suggests that the
child will be a leader and will inspire others with their bravery and heroism.
The use of these superlative phrases further emphasizes the astrologers'
admiration for this trait and the importance they place on it in predicting the
child's future.”
Simplified Meaning:
The
astrologers predict that the child born under this star will become a great
warrior and champion, showing exceptional courage and bravery in battle or
other challenges. This suggests the child will be a leader who inspires others
with their heroism. The use of superlative phrases highlights the astrologers'
admiration for these traits and underscores their importance in the child's
future.
The
extract emphasizes the idea that the tales of the mighty dead are an
"endless fountain of immortal drink" that pour down to us from the
heavens, suggesting that these stories and legends are timeless and will never
truly die. This theme speaks to the enduring power of art and literature to
transcend time and space and to continue to inspire and move people long
after
their creators have passed away
