Aunt Jennifer's Tigers-Andrienne Rich-English for Class 12-CBSE English ...

Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers – Summary

 Poet: Adrienne Rich

Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers is a poem that highlights the suffering and oppression faced by women in a male-dominated society. Through the character of Aunt Jennifer, the poet portrays the hardships and burdens of married life.

The poem begins with Aunt Jennifer embroidering bright and beautiful tigers on a panel. The tigers move confidently through the green forest. They are fearless, proud, and majestic. They are not afraid of the men standing beneath the trees. These tigers symbolize courage, freedom, strength, and self-confidence.

In contrast, Aunt Jennifer herself is weak and frightened. Her fingers tremble as she works with her needle and wool. The poet suggests that the hardships and responsibilities of married life have made her physically and emotionally weak. The phrase “the massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band” symbolizes the burden and oppression she has experienced in her marriage.

In the final stanza, the poet says that even after Aunt Jennifer’s death, the marks of her suffering and fear will remain. She will continue to be remembered as a woman who lived under oppression. However, the tigers she has created will continue to prance fearlessly across the panel. Thus, while Aunt Jennifer remains a victim of social restrictions, her art survives as a symbol of freedom, courage, and the spirit she longed to possess.

III. Long Answer Type Question :

Q. What does the poet bring out in the poem, 'Aunt Jennifer's Tigers'?

Ans. In this poem, the poet brings out the common story of almost all married women through the story of Aunt Jennifer. All married women spend all their life in doing household chores from morning till evening, produce children and bring them up with loving care, put up with all the bullying of their husbands and then at last pass into their graves with no regard from anyone. Aunt Jennifer is a typical housewife.

She embroiders some tigers in wool on a screen. The tigers are lovely to look at. They seem to be prancing across the screen. Some men are standing under a tree. But the tigers don't seem afraid of them. They look very chivalric, sleek Iand brave. But Aunt Jennifer herself has become very old. She can hardly pull the ivory needle out of the wool. Uncle has dominated her so cruelly all her life that now she thinks those ordeals to be part of her life.

The poet imagines that even when Aunt Jennifer dies, there will be no peace for her. Even in her grave she will be thinking of her daily chores. The tigers on her panel will go on prancing as usual, but the poor Aunt Jennifer will be lying lifeless in her grave. This poem also depicts the picture of male chauvinism. Women give birth to men but those very men dominate and tyrannize over them all their life.
